DNCU Seeks Donations For Baby Box Drive

DNCU News:

SANTA FE — Del Norte Credit Union (DNCU) has announced a baby box donation drive to help improve the lives of the babies that need it most. The drive began June 15 and ends Aug. 31. The end goal is to fill as many baby boxes as possible with essential items for newborns, and present them to Many Mothers.

Items include diapers, wipes, diaper ointment, onesies, sleep sacks, swaddle blankets, pacifiers, wash cloths and towels, baby wash, bi-lingual books, toys, bottles, nursing supplies, new and gently used clothing up to six months, new and gently used baby equipment and anything else for babies younger than six months old. Community members can drop off donations at any DNCU location.

“Looking at these baby boxes reminded us of how impactful it could be to help out,” DNCU President/CEO Chuck Valenti said. “We appreciate the dedication that organizations like Many Mothers have to our communities. They are truly improving lives, and that is why we decided to fill as many boxes as we can for new mothers and the new additions to our community.” DNCU’s mission is to improve lives in our communities.

Many Mothers is an organization specializing in mental, physical and emotional support for new mothers in Los Alamos, Española and Santa Fe County. The organization also supports mothers with educational talks on proper ways to care for a newborn. They advocate for a safe space for the newborn to sleep in. According to several health organizations, an estimated 3,500 infants die each year from deaths related to sleep. Some of these include suffocation, asphyxiation, and other preventable deaths. This is why Many Mothers offers cardboard baby boxes filled with essential items for the mothers they are working with. These baby boxes come with a fitted (and cozy) mattress for the newborn to sleep in.

“It’s challenging to be the parent of a new baby. Many Mothers’ incredible volunteers and staff are the 21st century village who are available to help hold the baby, answer questions, wash dishes, fold laundry, and just be there for exhausted and sometimes overwhelmed parents,” Many Mothers Executive Director Nancy Guthrie said.
