Discover Aha-Moments At Los Alamos ScienceFest Virtually Or In-Person … Driven By Science … July 6-11

Los Alamos MainStreet News:

Los Alamos ScienceFest returns this year Tuesday, July 6 through Sunday, July 11 for a hybrid event that will feature both virtual and in-person Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) activities.

Marking the first in-person festival to return to Los Alamos since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors are encouraged to attend safely in-person or to join the fun through online streaming.

“We’re thrilled to be welcoming back locals and visitors to celebrate what our community is most well known for—groundbreaking science,” County Marketing Manager Kelly Stewart said. “We know people have missed visiting Los Alamos, as much as we have missed welcoming them. ScienceFest 2021 will be an incredible event, and we encourage everyone to dive into the fun of scientific discoveries—whether you’re joining us in Los Alamos or virtually.”

The annual Los Alamos ScienceFest, now in its 14th year, will highlight the community’s role at the forefront of current science and technology research and innovation – from space exploration to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The July event will cover educational topics for the whole family. The goal: make science fun, more accessible and easy-to-understand, and inspire youth to have a passion for exploring STEAM topics – while at the same time revealing some of the focus areas for Los Alamos National Laboratory and other local scientists. This year it’s ScienceFest+, which means there will be more STEAM topics to discover, experience and learn, through a variety of mediums.

Live science panels and demos will take place after 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday of ScienceFest week at Fuller Lodge, and include topics ranging from COVID disease modeling, to composting demonstrations. Several outdoor movie night screenings will engage the entire family, from Robin Williams’ classic, Flubber, to the filmed-in-New Mexico The Astronaut Farmer. Virtual activity options will also be available for those not yet comfortable coming out in-person.

While Saturday’s typical Discovery Day festival won’t be happening due to the ongoing pandemic, Saturday, July 10 will still feature some in-person activities, including an Electric Vehicle Show and limited organizations present for some demonstrations and STEAM education.
