Dave Patterson has owned Dave’s Barbershop in Central Park Square for nine years. He came to Los Alamos with another plan, but ultimately decided to go to Northern New Mexico College’s El Rito Campus to learn barbering.
“My wife put me through school,” Patterson said. “Then I turned around and did the same for her.”
He worked in the shop for six years when it belonged to Ted Armijo and was called Ted’s. When Armijo was ready to retire, Patterson bought the shop.
Patterson recently remodeled the interior of the shop. Kids, as well as sports fans, will appreciate the big screen TV, now equipped with Netflix. Everything is spiffed up and the shop now includes a shampoo station. The sports theme is still very much in evidence. The redo has made room for another barber station, bringing the total to four stations now, “so the entire staff can cut hair at once!”
“Our business is all walk-ins,” Patterson said. “Now things will move faster for the customers and even adding a chair, it’s roomier than it was before.”
Dave’s is a real family business. In addition to Dave, his brother Greg Casados and his cousin Loren Maes, also are barbers at the shop. Until recently, his cousin Dakota Patterson worked there as well.
“Most of our customers are repeats,” Patterson said, and if they go somewhere else, they come back to us. We’re really good at fixing other people’s mistakes.”
One thing that sets Dave’s apart is their haircuts for kids. The barbers all have a gentle, calm way with youngster that doesn’t cause tears or tantrums.
Patterson and his staff invite everyone to stop by and see the remodel. Dave’s is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 7 a.m. to p.m. Saturdays. They are in Central Park Square, next door to China Moon on Central Avenue in downtown Los Alamos. Visit them on Facebook or call 505.662.3880 for more information.
