Daily Postcard: The moon Above Bandelier

Daily Postcard: The moon is framed in a cloudy sunset at Bandelier National Monument. Visitor Center hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Visitor Center will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Trails are open dawn to dusk 365 days a year, but Bandelier is alerting visitors not to let the short days of winter catch them unaware and to be sure to leave the park before dark. Also, strong winds and hazard trees because of recent fires and forest die-back have left some areas of the park potentially dangerous during times of high winds. Bandelier encourages visitors to use caution and stay alert when hiking on windy days, and to backcountry camp well away from stands of dead or fire damaged trees. And because Bandelier is in a remote location, with cell service in the canyon limited to Verizon 4G only, services like Uber and Lyft will bring people to the park, but there may be no way to contact a ride out. So plan a pick up before being dropped off at Bandelier. Photo by Sally King/NPS
