Daily Postcard: An amazing encounter with a Painted Redstart took place Thursday evening at the Los Alamos Reservoir. The beautiful bird came in close and put on quite a show. It’s been hanging out at the reservoir for five days now, and appears to be settling in to molt. It is missing several feathers in some places and growing in new ones in others. Painted Redstarts are normally found in the high mountain forests in Mexico and southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico and Big Bend in Texas. They occasionally wander north to the Jemez Mountains. Photo by Michael Smith
