Daily Postcard: Cooper’s Hawk In Tree At Bandelier

Daily Postcard: A Cooper’s Hawk prepares to feed her fledglings nesting in a tree recently at Bandelier National Monument. After about a month in the nest, Cooper’s Hawks start to fledge by hopping from branch to branch in the nest tree, learning how to use their wings and feet. At this point, their wing feathers are not done growing, and their tail is about 1/2 grown. As flight feathers continue to grow, and the fledglings gain confidence, they will make short flights to surrounding trees. At this age, they are still dependent on their mom and dad for food. For the first weeks, prey is brought directly to the nest. Soon, the adults begin encouraging young to fly to nearby trees for meals. During this time, the young hawks are very vocal as they attempt to locate their parents and their next meal. Courtesy/BNM
