Daily Postcard: Among its hundreds of Broad-Tailed, Black-Chinned, and Rufous Hummingbirds, Los Alamos is visited by a small number of Calliope Hummingbirds in late summer. The last week of July and first week of August are peak times to see these birds as they are already heading south from breeding in the northern Rockies and are now on their way to wintering grounds in southern Mexico. Local wildlife photographer Jonathan Dowell, Ph.D. took this photo on Barranca Mesa on Friday. Dowell is competing in the American Birding Association’s annual Big Year contest.
