Daily Postcard: Black-Chinned Hummingbird

Spring is here and hummingbirds are beginning to appear around town like this Black-chinned Hummingbird spotted Sunday at a home on Barranca Mesa. Its velvety black chin is bordered by a thin strip of iridescent purple only visible when light hits it just right. Black-chinned Hummingbirds are exceptionally widespread, found from mountain forests to deserts. Many winter along the Gulf Coast. These tiny birds often perch at the very top of a bare tree branch. They have a low-pitched humming sound produced by their wings. Source: allaboutbirds.org. Photo by Selvi Viswanathan
