Staff Report

Libertarian Chris Luchini is running for Los Alamos County Sheriff. He recently stopped by the Los Alamos Daily Post to answer questions about the local election.

This is part of a series of Q&As with political candidates that the Post will publish ahead of the Nov. 8 General Election.

POST: How long have you lived in Los Alamos?

LUCHINI: I’ve lived in the area since 1999, in White Rock since 2008
POST: Where do you work?
LUCHINI: I run my own software company, as well as acting as CTO for a Geothermal-power/oil-and-gas, and soon lithium production operation.
POST: Why are you running for sheriff?
LUCHINI: This Sheriff position is unique in the state in that it is not a law enforcement position. We need a sheriff that will not try to make this position something that the county charter, and multiple lawsuits have determined that it is not: something other than a purely administrative position tasked with maintaining the Sex Offender registery. This includes ensuring that the contents of that registry is easily available to the residents of Los Alamos County, in various locations, and not just on line.
POST: What do you believe is the most important role that sheriff  plays in Los Alamos County?
LUCHINI: The Sheriff should demonstrate their commitment to the rule of law by constraining their activities and demeanor to the office as it exists.
POST: What skills and experience do you have that you believe would be beneficial to the position?
LUCHINI: I’ve had to operate various companies in highly regulated environments. This has prepared me to practice strict adherence to the statute defining the duties of, and established procedure for the duties of the Sheriff’s office.
POST: What previous community involvement have you had in Los Alamos and outside of the community?
LUCHINI: I’m a member of the Sheriff’s Posse that puts on pancake breakfasts to benefit various local charities. I’m an instructor for the Sportsmans Club, and the current Chair of the Libertarian Party of New Mexico.
