During the weekend of Oct. 26, six local athletes competed in two different weighlifting events in Albuquerque.
Kim Granzow, Kelly Gill and Shawn McGrane competed in the New Mexico State Games at Gainz Fitness.
Granzow competed in the 60-64 year old age group, lifting in the 64 Kg weight class. She took first place in the Olympic lifts known as the Snatch with a lift of 27 Kg and the Clean and Jerk with a lift of 37 Kg and the total of the 2 lifts, which was 64 Kg.
Gill, competing in the 64 Kg weight class and 35-39 age group, won first place in the Snatch with a lift of 65 Kg, and the Clean and Jerk, lifting 79 Kg. With a Total of 144 Kg, she set state records in the Snatch and Total.
McGrane, competing in the 45-49 year old age bracket at 81 Kg body weight, won first place in the Snatch, Clean and Jerk, and Total, while setting state records in all three categories. His successful lifts were 84 Kg in the Snatch, 109 Kg in the Clean and Jerk, and 193 Kg Total.
Leona Wedgeworth, Mel Roybal and Ang Hernandez all competed in the Night of the Deadlift at Iron Soul Gym in Albuquerque. This was a benefit event for the Military Order of the Purple Heart, which raised more than $3,500 for the charity.
Wedgeworth, coming off arthroscopic knee surgery, deadlifted a very respectable 269.5 pounds.
Roybal got a personal best Deadlift of 314.2 pounds, competing in the 125-149.9 pound class, and placed 2nd in the event.
Hernandez won first place in her weight class with a lift of 258.5 pounds in the 100-124.9 pound weight class.
All six of these athletes train at CrossFit Los Alamos, and all except Granzow are coaches there. The hard work and dedication these folks exhibit to be so successful at such events should make all of Los Alamos proud!
