NMSC News:SANTA FE ― The Administrative Office of the Courts is warning New Mexicans about a scam in which people are called and threatened with arrest unless they pay money for failing to report to jury duty.
Anyone receiving such a call should not agree to pay any money and immediately should report the incident to local law enforcement.
“New Mexico courts never demand a payment of money from individuals who miss a jury service date,” Artie Pepin, director of the Administrative Office of the Courts said.
A Doña Ana County court received a report about the scam in which a caller told a man that he must deliver two packages of money totaling $1,000 to a kiosk at a Las Cruces court to avoid arrest for missing jury duty. Similar scams have surfaced in the past in other areas of the state.
New Mexicans can call any state court to determine if they have been summoned to jury duty or if they have questions about past jury service. Contact information for state courts is available online at https://www.nmcourts.gov/find-a-court.aspx.
