County Offers Video Tutorial Aimed at Educating Employees about Area History, Attractions

Los Alamos County is offering free online training videos designed to help its employees, who interact with tourists and other visitors on a daily basis, to become experts in the County’s history, culture, attractions and services.
The Ambassador Training Program is an effort of the Los Alamos County Chamber of Commerce and the Los Alamos Lodgers’ Tax Advisory Board.

DPU Transformer Inspection Begins This Week
Assessment of Electric Distribution System
Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities recently awarded a contract to JACO, Inc. to inspect transformers as part of the County’s overhead electric system assessment.
Beginning in the North Community as early as Tuesday, Feb. 19, an inspection crew will focus its effort in the Los Alamos town site over the next couple of months.
DPU Officials request customer cooperation in providing the inspection crew access to electric transformers that may be located in backyards or behind closed gates.

Los Alamos Police Chief to Repair Health Issue
LAPD News:
Los Alamos Police Chief Wayne Torpy wanted to let the community know that he will be away from his office for about four to six weeks.
He will undergo surgery in Albuquerque Tuesday to repair damage to a heart valve caused from an infection for which he was treated several weeks ago.
“Our Emergency Management Coordinator Phil Taylor will be acting chief in my absence,” Torpy said. “I look forward to getting this issue taken care of and returning to work as soon as I’ve recovered.

By Pete SheeheyIt became clear in December 2012 that our net county tax revenues for fiscal year (FY) 2013 would be about $9 million less than initially projected.
We can make up half of that shortfall by economizing on county operations. The County has maintained reserves of 25 percent of yearly revenues, about $15 million, to deal with such problems.
So why not go ahead with our original spending plans, and just dip into reserves for the other half of the shortage? The answer is that this is potentially not a single-year budget problem.

County Administrator Releases Information on Capital Projects
COUNTY News:
Los Alamos County Administrator Harry Burgess released information today about the upcoming Council discussion regarding capital projects.
The discussion will take place at the Council meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 in Council Chambers at 20th Street and Central Avenue.
As previously announced, the Council’s adopted budget guidance is to defer some projects up to four years and up to $12.5 million in order to assist with projected revenue shortfalls.
The only projects that will be considered for deferral are the eight projects approved in May 2012. They are:
