March 7 at 11:30 a.m. / Police charged a 13-year-old Santa Fe boy with larceny in the 2100 block of Hawk Drive. The boy was referred to the juvenile probation officer and released to his parents.

“We Who Are Clay” activities continue with a special Mesa Public Library’s Authors Speak presentation at 7 p.m., Thursday March 28.

Authors Bart Kaltenbach and Barbara Anschel with photographer Steve Fitch will give a slide lecture as part of a much larger community wide effort organized by the Los Alamos Historical Museum.

Contractors and Los Alamos County staff were digging at Piedra Loop and Sherwood Boulevard in White Rock when a gas main was ruptured and police and fire department staff were called to the scene.

The situation has been contained. Firefighters with the Los Alamos Fire Department are standing by in case of emergency, but at this time the gas has not ignited.

Wildfire 2013 Event Set for March 30

COUNTY News:

As wildfire season begins, residents are urged to attend an informational event called “Wildfire 2013” set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 30 in Fuller Lodge.

The event is sponsored by the Los Alamos Fire Department, in partnership with several local agencies:

  • National Park Service;
  • U.S. Forest Service;
  • Valles Caldera National Preserve;
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory;
  • Los Alamos County Emergency Management;
  • Interagency Wildfire Management Team; and
  • National Weather Service.

Pet of the Week: Handsome and friendly 2-year-old Turbo arrived at the Los Alamos County Animal shelter because his owner moved to a place that would not allow dogs.

Turbo likes adult humans, female dogs and some male dogs. He does not know any cats.

His size and energy are not conducive to children, and it is not known how he relates to them.

Turbo loves tennis balls and wants to retrieve them for you. Turbo has recently been diagnosed with thyroid issues.

DPU Charter Review Committee Holding First Meeting

The Department of Public Utilities Charter Review Committee will hold its first meeting 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27 in the Community Building’s Training Room, 20th Street and Central Avenue.

This will primarily be an organizational meeting to appoint a chair and vice-chair and review the scope of work.

Electric Upgrades Underway on Deacon Street

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities’ electric linemen will begin trenching on Deacon Street today, March 14, to install new electric lines to upgrade circuit 14.

This circuit services the eastern portion of the Los Alamos townsite.

Crews will trench 120 feet at the intersection of Deacon Street and 17th Street to install the new lines.

Work will continue for several days. No interruption of power is required at this time. Motorists and pedestrians are encouraged to be attentive to the work zone, as work proceeds.

Det. Sgt. Oliver Morris and his team at the Los Alamos Police are set to host a “Prescription Drug Take Back Day” between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., April 27 in the east parking lot of Los Alamos Medical Center, 3917 West Road.

The local event is being conducted as part of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s national “Prescription Drug Take Back Day.”

Community Broadband Network Business Plan Presentation Tuesday

Tuesday March 12, Los Alamos County Council will hear a presentation on the Community Broadband Network project; a last-mile, open-access, fiber optic network project under consideration by Los Alamos County.

The project team will focus the presentation on the business plan and its recommendations, including a proposed increase in gross receipts tax to finance the project.
