April 23 at 7:44 a.m. / A 54-year-old Abiquiu man reported that someone damaged his vehicle parked on Rose Street. The estimated loss is unknown.

County Hazard Mitigation Plan Public Meeting May 19

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County is finalizing its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP). This will be an update to the 2006 plan. 

The purpose of this LHMP update is to assess risk to natural hazards, implement actions to reduce future losses, and maintain eligibility for federal mitigation funds in accordance with the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000.

Members of the community have a very important role in this process, and a draft of the LHMP Update will be presented to the public at 6 p.m. May 19 in Council Chambers. The County’s consultant will be soliciting public comments about the document Read More

Pet Of The Week: Tyson The Dog

Tyson is a 1.5-year-old neutered male pit cross. He returned to the Los Alamos County Animal Shelter when his owner’s rental home changed the rules.

Tyson is active and playful. He is at a good age to continue training. He is reported to be friendly with adults and gentle children and most dogs. He might be a bit too active for small children. It’s not yet known how he is with cats, but he is reported to have a high prey drive with ducks and other birds.

Future Energy Resource Committee Meets Thursday

DPU News:

The Future Energy Resource Committee changed its weekly meetings from Tuesdays to Thursdays. The meeting time of 11:30 a.m. and location at the Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave. remain the same.

Note that the Committee does not meet in the same room each week. Be sure to check the FER Committee website for the appropriate meeting room, as well as agendas, and minutes here.

Faulty Underground Cable Causes Tuesday’s Outage

DPU News:

Electric linemen from the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities determined that a faulty underground cable at 39th Street was the cause of Tuesday’s power outage, which affected more than 1,000 residents.

The 30 minute outage affected the Western Area and extended east to Oppenheimer Drive. Isolating the faulty line, crews were able to backfeed the affected area with another source, restoring power by 11:50 a.m., and by 3:30 p.m., complete the repairs.

The distribution system is expected to be placed to its original configuration today.

Following four days of budget hearings, the Los Alamos County Council this evening voted 5-2 to pass the FY-2016 proposed budget in the amount of $193,163,741.

Council Tentatively Approves CEDD Budget With Addition Of New Building Official/Safety Officer

The Los Alamos County Council voted 5-2 to tentatively approve the Community and Economic Development Department’s FY-2016 proposed budget as presented with the addition of one full time building official/safety officer to augment the one building official/safety officer currently on staff. The CEDD, with a budget of $13.42 percent comprises 14 percent of the County’s General Fund. Branding Meeting Coming Up May 5 At Fuller Lodge

The public is invited to attend a branding and logo development kick-off meeting  5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5 at Fuller Lodge.

The meeting will be hosted by Atlas Advertising, the County’s branding consultant, who will be in Los Alamos May 5 and 6. SPORTS News:

Athletes competed in the Los Alamos Special Olympics Track and Field Meet Saturday at Sullivan Field.

Several volunteers helped work the event and Los Alamos Firefighters also assisted and placed ribbons on athletes at the conclusion of their events.

The Los Alamos Police Department helps raise money for local Special Olympic athletes through T-shirt sales and donations.  Read More
