Ice Rink Offices Closed Sept. 9-12 For Staff Training

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos County Ice Rink offices will be closed beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 through Friday, Sept. 12 for PROS Division staff training. 

The public will be able to rent Miniature Golf Equipment (Putters and Golf Balls) and Tennis Equipment (Racquets and Tennis Balls) at the PROS Administrative window located on the first floor of the Los Alamos County Municipal Building, 1000 Central Ave, Suite 150. 

The PROS Administrative Window is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday and the phone number is 505.662.8170.

State Police will conduct Sobriety Checkpoints, Saturation Patrols and Registration, Insurance and Drivers’ License Checkpoints in all New Mexico counties during the month of September.

These efforts continue to show a significant reduction in alcohol related fatalities. This is attributed to the continued media attention and intensive advertising. Fire Hydrant Painting Continues Around Town

The Fire Hydrant Painting Competition is part up the 2014 Los Alamos ScienceFest, which kicks off today. See Planes Meet Pilots At ‘The Science of Flight’ Sept. 13

“The Science of Flight” set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 13 is an opportunity for kids to get up close and personal with several cool airplanes and their pilots.

Home-built planes and a beautifully restored classic will be featured, along with educational displays and informal pilot talks about aerodynamics too – explore “how planes work” with engaging, hands-on demonstrations and airplane models.

Public Invited To ‘An Artful Celebration’ Sept. 11

The Arts in Public Places Board (APPB) will host “An Artful Celebration” Thursday evening, Sept. 11, as part of week-long events planned for Los Alamos ScienceFest.

Beginning at 5 p.m., tours of the public art housed in the Municipal Building in downtown Los Alamos will depart from the lobby. In addition, from 5 to 7 p.m., guests and residents are invited to review art proposals and provide comments to the APPB for outdoor artwork envisioned for installation on the large plaza on the west side of the Municipal Building.

Los Alamos County’s Allison Majure Elected Vice Chair Of Northern New Mexico Citizens’ Advisory Board

The Northern New Mexico Citizens’ Advisory Board (NNMCAB) held elections at its July 30 board meeting at La Fonda on the Plaza in Santa Fe.

Los Alamos resident Allison Majure was elected to serve as vice chair. Majure works in communications at the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities. She has served on the NNMCAB since March 8, 2012.

Doug Sayre served as vice chair over the past fiscal year was elected at the July 30 meeting to serve as chair for Fiscal Year 2015. He is a native resident of Santa Fe and has served on the NNMCAB since Sept. 21, 2011. Officers

SHELTER News:

Beau is a terrific, friendly, social and all around great dog recently surrendered to the Los Alamos County Animal Shelter. 

He is young, about two years old and loves to take walks and hang with people. Beau is a tan (almost gold) and white bulldog mix. He seems eager to please and should be very trainable. 

Beau is big and strong, so is likely to be a bit too much dog for a family with small children.

Los Alamos Police arrested Steven C. Porter Monday and charged him with escape from a community custody program, a felony, for tampering with his court ordered electronic monitoring device.

He is being held in jail without bond and scheduled to go back before Los Alamos Magistrate Court Judge Pat Casados at 8:30 a.m., Thursday at the Justice Center.

Porter, 46, was initially arrested Sunday, Aug.

Free Flight Giveaway During ScienceFest Events

During upcoming ScienceFest events in September, Los Alamos County Airport (LAM) will promote the new commercial air service being offered between Los Alamos and Albuquerque by giving away two free round-trip flights on New Mexico Airlines, the company under contract to the County that provides commercial airline service between LAM and Albuquerque’s Sunport (ABQ).

LAM will sponsor three booths:

  • RocketDay 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Sept. 6 at Overlook Park;
  • Science of Flight 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 13 at the airport; and
  • ExpoDay 11 a.m.
