League Primary Election Voter Guide Scheduled April 30

LWVLA News:

This election season was already remarkable with so many candidates running for elective office in northern New Mexico.

Now, with public meetings such as candidate forums banned in the effort to reduce the impact of the coronavirus, information about the choices that voters will make at the polls is especially critical.

The League of Women Voters of Los Alamos is collecting information for a Voter Guide for the primary election. Election Day is June 2; early voting begins May 5.

Census 2020 Kicks Off Online Today

2020 CENSUS News:

Today, the Census 2020 kicks off online as part of a process taking several months meant to ensure everyone is counted. 

Locally, Assistant to the County Manager Linda Matteson conducts special projects for Manger Harry Burgess and the census project is one of those projects.

All 33 counties and 23 Tribal governments will participate to make sure New Mexico is represented for the count.

“As part of the effort to ensure an accurate count in New Mexico, the State awarded all counties grant funds,” Matteson said. “One of the requirements was to form a local Complete Count Committee.” Read More

The Los Alamos Police Department wants the community to be aware that there have been 15 victims of burglaries within the last six days.

Los Alamos County DPU Suspends Utility Service Shut-Offs

COUNTY News:

As of March 13, 2020, officials with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities suspended shutting utility services off to customers for non-payment due to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency. 

Board of Public Utilities members agreed at the March 25 meeting and directed the DPU staff to continue this practice until the New Mexico Department of Health COVID-19 Order is lifted.

“We still encourage customers to try and keep up with utility bills,” Utilities Manager Philo Shelton said.

Los Alamos County has posted the proposed Biennial Budget online, along with a Citizen’s Guide to the Budget, which offers a high-level summary and budget overview.

LAFD Wildfire Fuels Reduction Mitigation Gets Underway

Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) will begin work this week on an important wildfire fuels reduction project that will provide much-needed mitigation in several areas of Los Alamos.

LAFD has received grant funding for the project, which will include the following areas:

  • Ponderosa Estates Range Road;

  • Walnut Bench, Villa Bench;

Overlook Park Closed Thursday For DOH COVID-19 Testing

COUNTY News:

The Los Alamos Community Services Department announced today that Overlook Park in White Rock will be closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Thursday, April 2, to enable the New Mexico Department of Health’s scheduled testing for COVID-19 to occur.

The drive-through testing will utilize the entrance road into the park and the parking lots. The closure ensures that screening can take place more efficiently and without any interference by members of the public using the park.

Los Alamos County Eco Station And Overlook Convenience Center Reduce Hours Of Operation Beginning April 1

COUNTY News:

Due to COVID-19 concerns, the Los Alamos County Eco Station and White Rock Overlook Convenience Center will reduce operating hours, effective Wednesday, April 1.

In an effort to reduce possible exposure between customers and residents, the Bulk Waste Collection Program and Household Hazardous Waste Program will be suspended until further notice.

Commercial and residential collection services will remain unchanged. As a reminder, set out roll carts by 8 a.m. and bag all trash.

Los Alamos County COVID-19 Update: Food Supply Secure; Residents Asked Not To Hoard Food, Supplies

COUNTY News:

Officials in the Los Alamos County’s Emergency Management Office, along with Red Cross and other local responders, are urging residents to refrain from hoarding food and other paper products or cleaning supplies as New Mexico enters another week of “Stay at Home” under the Governor’s Executive Order issued March 23.
