County Update 9 On COVID-19: Public Works ‘Still At Work’

COUNTY News:

Public Works Director Anne Laurent commented today on questions from residents wondering what kinds of services are still available.

“At this point, it’s business as usual for Public Works,” she said, adding that they are still receiving and processing routine requests for items such as filling potholes and monitoring streetlights to ensure they are functioning properly.

“We understand that people are at home and relying upon us to provide standard services,” she said, such as trash and recycling pick up. “We are not scaling back on the level of service or established schedules of routine service to customers at this point, although we are taking extra precautions; and we are asking patrons who bring their waste or recycling to the Eco Station or Overlook Convenience Center to be patient and accommodating with our staff. Our facilities’ and custodial crews have increased cleaning and sanitizing in the public buildings that are still open and we continue to encourage members of the public to do business on-line or postpone items that are not urgent.”

Atomic City Transit is continuing to provide Dial-a-Ride service, and has been modified to adhere to social distancing recommendations. “Service is still available, just in a different way, and signs have been posted on all bus stops and on our website on how to request a ride.”

The only closure within Public Works is the terminal building at the Airport. The rental car company located in the building shut down this week and the building is closed to the public, although the Airport remains open and the Airport Manager is still working to keep the Airport and runway functioning and in service for flights to/from Los Alamos.

“We’re still working on projects and assisting with site reviews or other engineering services,” Laurent said, adding that the engineering staff is assessing possible impacts on capital projects that are either out to bid or that were scheduled to be going out to bid.

“It’s not clear yet what the ‘ripple effect’ may be longer term on our projects – either for construction services or supplies,” she said, “However, we will be doing our part to keep things on track and moving forward to the best of our ability.”

Citizens can send requests and questions to lacpw@lacnm.us or call 505.662.8150.
