County Seeks Volunteer ‘Actors’ For Emergency Exercise

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County will be conducting a County-wide active shooter exercise Saturday, May 18 at the University of New Mexico – Los Alamos campus.

The campus will be closed May 18 for the exercise, which is being conducted in order to test and improve the County’s overall preparedness in responding to an active shooter event.

The County is seeking at least 30 volunteers to participate as “actors” in the exercise. Exercise activity will take place over approximately seven hours beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m. May 18.

All volunteers will need to arrive by 7 a.m. at UNM-LA, Building 2 in order to be registered and properly briefed. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at no cost.

In order to train in a realistic environment, an active shooter event will be simulated during the exercise. Volunteers are needed to support this simulation by playing roles associated with the simulated event, such as victims, witnesses, by-standers, etc. Volunteer actor/victims will be provided with symptomology cards (simulating injuries) and moulage t-shirts or other moulage materials to enhance the realism of injuries associated with an active shooter event.

Volunteers will be placed at various locations throughout the exercise areas on the campus. All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and must sign participation waivers and other necessary forms.

Interested individuals should provide the following information:

  • First and last name; and
  • Contact phone number and email address.

This information should be emailed to lacmanager@lacnm.us – please use “Volunteer for Active Shooter Exercise” in the subject line of the email.

The deadline to sign up to volunteer is 5 p.m. Friday, May 10.

Individuals will be emailed the waiver and photo release forms to review, complete, sign and return to the County, preferably by email before May 17. Questions can be sent to lacmanager@lacnm.us regarding volunteering for the exercise. Additional outreach to the community about the campus closure and exercise will be forthcoming in May.
