County Seeks Public Input On WAC Building Improvements

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos citizens will have three opportunities to learn about the condition and schedule for the Women’s Army Corp (WAC) Dormitory improvement project.

The Los Alamos County Public Works Department and its Design Consultant are holding virtual meetings next week to present the project and to solicit feedback from meeting participants on the proposed upgrades, future uses and how the project might impact the neighborhood.

The virtual meetings are scheduled as follows:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 5:30 p.m. for neighbors surrounding the WAC Dormitory:
  • Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 12 noon as part of the
    Tourism Implementation Task Force meeting:

  • Wednesday, Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m. as part of the
    Historic Preservation Advisory Board meeting:

Used during the Manhattan Project, the Women’s Army Corp Dormitory was identified as “park-eligible” in the enabling legislation that authorized the Manhattan Project National Historical Park (MPNHP) in 2015. Los Alamos County subsequently purchased the WAC building in 2019 from the Christian Science Society as it was one of the few remaining properties built for the Manhattan Project.

According to County Project Manager Wayne Kohlrust, now that the building is publicly owned, it is possible for the property to be officially in the MPNHP. The County plans to advocate for that change after upgrading the facility and registering it for the National Register of Historic Places.

“We’re in the early design stages, which is why we are soliciting public feedback now,” Kohlrust said. “We anticipate bringing to the County Council the results of this outreach effort. Our design consultant will develop three conceptual designs which will also be presented to Council. Ultimately, a design and a plan for use will be finalized with anticipated construction activities to begin in late 2022 or early 2023.”
