County Seeks Citizen Volunteers for New Creative District Advisory Committee

Citizens, business owners and representatives interested in Los Alamos County’s recently adopted arts and culture district (a.k.a., Creative District) are invited to apply to join the Creative District Advisory Committee forming this month. Letters of interest are due to the County by 5, Monday, Oct. 16.

The County Administrator is seeking citizen volunteers to join representatives of cultural and business assets operating within the adopted boundary of the Creative District to provide guidance and advice to Council and staff regarding the County’s role in the implementation of the Creative District Master Plan—a plan designed for the purpose of achieving economic revitalization of Downtown Los Alamos through the preservation, support and promotion of the community’s arts, culture, and science and technology assets and attractions.

Committee member selection will be based on the following criteria:

  • have a high interest in the County’s arts and culture organizations, businesses and attractions;
  • represent a wide range of interests & activities (residents or commercial/business owners);
  • have actively served with local community groups or organizations;
  • have a fair working knowledge of local government and its services; and
  • live in either Los Alamos or White Rock.

A one-page letter of interest that addresses the selection criteria should be sent to the County no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16.

Interested applicants may be contacted with further questions about background or interest in the team and are asked to include a phone number, e-mail address and where they can be reached during business hours, as well as a home address, employer (if applicable), and any civic organizations/affiliations.

Letters should be addressed to Kelly Stewart, Marketing Specialist, Los Alamos County Community and Economic Development Department via e-mail at or mailed to 133 Central Park Square, Los Alamos, NM 87544.

Individuals can also mail or hand deliver their letter to the County’s Community and Economic Development Department located at the TRK Building at 195 East Road, Suite 104.

Selected individuals will be notified by or before Friday, Oct. 19. The Los Alamos County Council will appoint the Committee at its Oct. 30 Council meeting and work would get underway soon afterwards.

County Staff will assist the Committee and facilitate meetings.

Part of the New Mexico Economic Development Department’s Arts & Culture district program since August 2009, the State designated Los Alamos as the first “Creative District” in recognition of its unique blend of art, culture, history and science and technology.

The Master Plan—funded by the State, developed by the Creative District Steering Committee and adopted by County Council on April 24, 2012—proposes a District boundary, goals, projects, programs and participants to define, fund, implement and maintain the District as an economically-sustainable attraction for Los Alamos County.

To meet requirements of the State to qualify for future preservation funding grants, Los Alamos County must demonstrate progress and commitment to the execution of the Creative District Master Plan

Based on input from County staff and the members of the Los Alamos Creative District Steering Committee, Council directed County Staff to form and facilitate an advisory committee to advise County staff and Council on the implementation of projects identified in the Creative District Master Plan.

This approach is inspired by the structure and performance of the White Rock Master Plan Implementation Advisory Committee which has collaborated with County staff and advised Council regarding economic development projects in White Rock—including the recently completed White Rock Visitor Center and New Mexico Highway 4 Improvements project.
