County Pavement Preservation Efforts To Begin On Central

COUNTY News:

In preparation for winter, Los Alamos County Traffic & Streets will be conducting asphalt patching on Central Avenue as part of ongoing County pavement preservation efforts.

This work is scheduled ahead of the colder months to prevent further deterioration of the roadway surface during winter. The timing was carefully chosen to follow the busy summer season and occur before the asphalt plants close for the winter. Last week County staff went door-to-door to speak directly with many affected businesses.

The planned schedule is as follows:

  • Saturday, Sept. 28: Central Avenue will be closed from 15th Street to Oppenheimer. Crews will be cutting the boundaries for the asphalt patching. Work hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Monday, Sept. 30: Central Avenue will be closed from 15th Street to just east of 20th Street. The existing pavement will be removed, and the base will be prepared for paving. Work hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. This segment will remain closed overnight.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 1: Central Avenue will be closed from 15th Street to just east of 20th Street. Crews will pave the exposed areas. Work hours: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The road will reopen after paving is completed.
  • Wednesday, Oct. 2: Central Avenue will be closed from 20th Street to Oppenheimer. The existing pavement will be removed, and the base will be prepared for paving. Work hours: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The road will reopen at the end of the day to allow access  Thursday morning for the Farmers Market. Traffic will drive over the exposed base course during this time.
  • Thursday, Oct. 3: Central Avenue will be closed from 20th Street to Oppenheimer after the Farmers Market. Crews will pave the exposed areas. Work hours: 12:30-7 p.m. The road will reopen after paving is completed.
  • Friday, Oct. 4: Work will only take place if necessary.
