COUNTY News:
Los Alamos—where discoveries are made—served as a hub for research for the filmmakers of Adventures of a Mathematician, and Los Alamos County is honored to host the exclusive al fresco premiere of the film at the Ashley Pond Park Amphitheater Thursday, Sept. 30—a day before the film is released nationwide by Samuel Goldwyn.
The feature film—based on Stan Ulam’s autobiography—provides an engaging account of the top-secret Manhattan Project.
Presented by Los Alamos County and the Los Alamos Historical Society, viewers can watch the film beginning at 7:30 p.m., and then take part in a Q&A with writer/director Thor Klein and producer Lena Vurma—both of whom spent extensive time for their research in Los Alamos.
Prior to the film’s showing, enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes with Klein and Vurma, 1-2:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27 at Fuller Lodge.
“It was always our dream to come back to Los Alamos and show Adventures of a Mathematician to the community, as we received so much support from everyone we’ve met during our research, sharing their stories and knowledge about the Manhattan Project,” Vurma said. “Thank you to the Historical Society and Los Alamos County to make our dream come true!”
Los Alamos County Marketing Manager Kelly Stewart said, “We’re thrilled to be able to showcase the talent of Thor Klein and Lena Vurma, along with the rich history of Los Alamos and its contributions to groundbreaking science. Having the opportunity to view this film prior to its release, as well as hear from the filmmakers about their work is a rare and unique opportunity, and we hope all will come to celebrate Adventures of a Mathematician and Los Alamos—where discoveries are made.”
The events are free of charge. For more information or to register for the event, visit EventBrite. For more information on visiting Los Alamos, go to https://visitlosalamos.org.
About Adventures of a Mathematician
In this arresting account of the top-secret Manhattan Project, the brilliant Jewish-Polish mathematician Stan Ulam struggles with wartime loss and moral dilemmas at the dawn of the nuclear age. Along with his brother, Ulam escapes Poland on the eve of the Nazi invasion and eventually becomes a US citizen. His profound mastery of mathematics makes him a prized recruit to the legendary team of European scientists at Los Alamos working to develop the atomic bomb, but the young man is conflicted about his contributions to nuclear weaponry and haunted by the fate of the family he left behind in Poland. Director Thor Klein weaves an honest and poignant portrait of this brilliant and ambitious man caught in a moral crisis.
