Los Alamos County Council Chair Sharon Stover received a letter of resignation Thursday evening from Vice Chair Ron Selvage.

Selvage’s resignation followed his apology published in the Los Alamos Daily Post Tuesday for an indiscretion he had with a woman from Los Alamos while on an official visit to Moscow and Sarov, Russia last September.

Stover issued a statement to the Los Alamos Daily Post this morning regarding Selvage’s resignation.

“I have enjoyed working with Ron over the last two years on Council, and have known the Selvages for many years outside of Council business,” Stover said. “Ron and I have worked on different committees, initiatives and projects together. I always found his insights to be thoughtful and with an eye toward moving our community forward. However, being a Councilor is a demanding, time-consuming position, and so I respect his decision to resign in order to take some time to focus on his personal life right now.”

Los Alamos County is adding an agenda item to its Tuesday, Aug. 7 agenda for County Council to discuss the vacancy left by Selvage’s resignation and how to proceed.

“I would hope that the community would respect his (Selvage) action and support the Council as we move ahead to design a process to fill his vacancy on Tuesday evening,” Stover said.

Selvage had more than two years remaining on his Council term, which expires Dec. 31, 2014.
