Council Creates DPU Charter Review Committee

With a series of motions, the Los Alamos County Council appointed five people to the Department of Public Utilities Charter Review Committee.

The new DPU Charter Review Committee members are David Powell (DPU Board Member), Councilor Steve Girrens, Susan O’Leary, Kirk Christensen and Ed Birnbaum.

The Committee is tasked with looking into the issues of oversight, accountability and structure; determining if profits should be turned back to the Utilities Department and how additional utilities are approved.

The new committee is to hold public meetings and issue a final report with recommendations no later than Sept. 10.

Councilor Rick Reiss made a motion to accept the original Charter Review Committee’s recommendation and hold a public hearing on the original ordinance. His motion failed to obtain a second.
