LARC News:

The community is invited to participate in a Contra Dance event Monday, Nov. 17 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center, 1101 Bathtub Row in Los Alamos.

A lesson will be given at 7 p.m., followed by dancing 7:30-10 p.m. The caller is Katherine Bueler and music is by the “Bo y Yo” Band. No partner is required and beginners are welcome.

This event is sponsored by LARC Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation and Aspen Ridge. An $8 donation per person is requested, which goes to benefit Friends of the Senior Center.

What is contra dancing?

  • Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as Pride and Prejudice or Glory, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing.
  • Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you did in Junior High School square dancing.
  • Set it to fabulous, high energy and live music
  • Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude.

THAT’s Contra Dancing!
