SFNF News:

SANTA FE  Celebrate National Trails Day June 4 and 11 by helping the Santa Fe National Forest reroute two sections of the popular Winsor Trail.

National Trails Day is the American Hiking Society’s annual event to encourage Americans to enjoy the outdoors by highlighting trails and activities in all 50 states.

June 4, the Santa Fe National Forest, the Santa Fe Fat Tire Society and REI are teaming up for a National Trails Day event on the upper Winsor Trail. Volunteers will create a reroute to bypass a steep and badly eroded section of the Winsor National Recreation Trail. They will also work on rehabbing part of the existing trail as a trial technical trail section for mountain bikers.

To register for theJune 4 event, visit REI’s online event calendar at http://bit.ly/1XmX6Dl

June 11, Forest staff and volunteers will continue work on a reroute above Pacheco Canyon Road to help control erosion and mitigate user conflicts on the Winsor Trail. Volunteers for the June 11 workday should RSVP to Jennifer Sublett, Española District Volunteer Coordinator, at jasublett@fs.fed.us or 505.753.7331 so the Forest can provide tools and hardhats for all participants.

Work hours for both days are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Crews will meet at the Norski parking lot south of Ski Santa Fe for June 4 and at the Jinja Bar and Bistro parking lot (to carpool) in Santa Fe for June 11. Contact Jennifer Sublett for additional information.

Volunteers should wear long sleeves, long pants, above-ankle non-skid boots and leather gloves to protect them from terrain that can be thorny and rocky. They should bring a backpack with lunch and at least two quarts of water. Tools, hard hats, and great giveaways will be provided.
