Upcoming Author Talks at Jemez Springs Public Library:

At 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 6, Rabbi Shefa Gold presents her new book Are We There Yet? Travel as a Spiritual Practice. “… it is possible to know that we are always there, arriving wholly in this moment, fully present in this step, alive to the miracle of the journey. We are there whenever we are awake.”

Rabbi Shefa Gold is a leader in ALEPH: the Alliance for Jewish Renewal and received her ordination both from the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and from Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi (z”l). She is the director of C-DEEP, The Center for Devotional, Energy and Ecstatic Practice in Jemez Springs, New Mexico. She teaches workshops and retreats on the theory and art of Chanting, Devotional Healing, Spiritual Community-Building and Meditation. Learn more at RabbiShefaGold.com

At 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 12, Dennis Herrick presents his new book Esteban: the African Slave Who Explored America. Join Dennis Herrick for a slide show, discussion, question and answer session, & book-signing! “What little is known about Esteban mostly comes from 16th-century Spanish chroniclers, plus early American writers. All wrote with a condescension toward the Moroccan slave that has carried over into history books -- if he's mentioned at all. This biography emphasizes Esteban rather than the Spanish conquistadors. From a premier publisher of the Southwest, the University of New Mexico Press, this extensively researched biography restores a remarkable man to his proper role in history.”

Dennis Herrick is the author of many books and short stories. “I fancy myself as a writer -- albeit, one without fame or glory. When asked why I wrote Esteban's biography, I reply that all my books are about average people including him who face such daunting obstacles that they seemed destined to fail.

They are the underdogs that end up winning. Even at the personal level in sports, I tend to cheer for the underdog against the favorite.” Learn more at dennisherrick.com.
