United Church News:

“Join us at The United Church as we begin our Fall Programming Schedule, growing opportunities for the whole family,” Pastor Keith Lewis said. “We are a warm, family friendly congregation that seeks to grow together as we learn about following Christ in a contemporary society.”

There are four special offerings beginning Sunday, Sept. 8:

  • Holy Envy;
  • The Fellowship of the Ring;
  • Crown Jewel Chapters of the Epistles; and
  • Living Out Our Faith in the Modern World.

The first is diving into the book Holy Envy, facilitated by Alison Watkins.

“Barbara Brown Taylor, the renowned and beloved New York Times bestselling recounts her moving discoveries of finding the sacred in unexpected places,” Watkins said. “Come take a look at your own faith through the lens of another and see how it complements and challenges your view of God, creation and others.”

Watkins and her family joined the United Church in June of 2018 and she was inspired to teach after attending a class on Islam, taught a few years ago by Bob Weeks and John Bliss. She wanted to do another comparative religion class.

“I was given this book by Pastor Kara Windler and after reading it I decided it was a great way to look at how different religions,” Watkins said.

Watkins said she believes that in this case, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism can both inspire and challenge Christians on their own journey of faith.

Pastor Kara Windler will walk her class through J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. This class will explore the book in depth, while looking at the Wider legendarium.

Pastor David Elton will host a class called The Crown Jewel Chapters of the Epistles. Each week, the class will read a chapter from the New testament letters and learn more about the most influential of the Epistles.

Pastor Keith Lewis will host Living Out Our Faith in the Modern World, for youth and teens and children will continue weekly classes of Bible Stories with Nancy Bliss.

The church office is available at 505.662.2971 and services are 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Sundays. Classes are offered after Sunday services and begin at 11 a.m. and the community is welcome. Learn more about the church at www.unitedchurchla.org.
