U.S. SENATE News:
  • Senator will visit Otero and Doña Ana Counties

LAS CRUCES – U.S. Sen. Tom Udall will be in Las Cruces next week to announce policy recommendations following last summer’s 57th Annual New Mexico WRRI Water Conference.

He will also present service medals to a Korean vet's family and give remarks at the ribbon cutting for the new East Mesa Campus of the Doña Ana Community College.

In August 2012, Udall co-hosted the water conference, entitled "Hard Choices: Adapting Policy and Management to Water Scarcity," which focused on drought and water challenges in the West. In the following months, conference participants drafted a report based on policy recommendations made at the event.

Udall will release the water conference report on Tue. and discuss his legislative priorities as a result of its findings.

Also in Las Cruces, Udall present several military service medals posthumously for Marcelino Gonzales, a Korean War Army veteran from Doña Ana County. Last fall, Udall’s office assisted Gonzales in obtaining his medals to honor his military service, but sadly they arrived a few weeks after his death. Udall will present Gonzales’ medals to his widow, Erlinda.

After the award ceremony, he will meet with several local DREAMers to discuss comprehensive immigration reform.

While in the area, he also plans to visit Holloman Air Force Base to tour the 49th Medical Group facility and meet with the Committee of Fifty. President Obama requested $60 million in MILCON funding in his budget to construct a new medical clinic.

Udall is a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, which oversees MILCON funding, and supports the president's requests for the base.
