Taos Actor Brings ‘Every Brilliant Thing’ To Los Alamos Performing Arts Center Saturday Feb. 16

on February 9, 2019 - 7:42am

  • An immersive comedy about depression and the lengths we’ll go for those we love

The Performing Arts Center will host visiting artists from Taos in a performance of Every Brilliant Thing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16.

You’re seven years old. Mom’s in the hospital because, says Dad, “she’s done something stupid.” So you start to make a list – everything that’s brilliant about the world, everything worth living for. Number 1: ice cream. Number 2: water fights. Number six: roller coasters. Over years, the list grows, evolves, and takes on a life of its own.

Developed by writer Duncan Macmillan and comedian Johnny Donahoe, Every Brilliant Thing premiered in 2016 to rave reviews – the original production is now an acclaimed HBO documentary special. This one-person show weaves steadily from poignant to hilarious and back again, engaging audiences in an immersive theatrical experience that leaves them moved, grateful, and thinking about what might belong on a list of their own.

The play is directed by Chelsea Reidy, and stars Rita O’Connell. Taos playwright Ned Dougherty, also on the production team, found the script in the fall and passed it along.

“This script grabs you from line one. I knew Rita was hungry for a challenging role and project, and I could immediately envision her in the role. Few actors in our area could hit the highs and lows of this script and with Chelsea's direction, there's so much to discover on each page,” Dougherty said.

Every Brilliant Thing combines elements of theatre, conversation, stand-up comedy, and music. The play runs just over an hour, with time afterward for audiences to linger and chat while they sift through the pieces of the list.

“Some scripts just find you, I think. It’s a beautiful piece of work, and really unique in the way it brings the audience into the story. I’ve loved working on it, and can’t wait to share it with our community,” O’Connell said. “February is typically a hard month for me, emotionally speaking, so I hope this show will bring a little light to anyone else who finds themselves getting a bit bleak with winter.”

The play will be performed at the Los Alamos County Performing Arts Center (home of Los Alamos Little Theatre), 1670 Nectar St. Doors open at 7 p.m. The play begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15, and will be available at the door the evening of the performance.
