Support Local Business During Road Construction

Looking down the road, no pun intended, all of this road construction will be good for Los Alamos. Better roads will bring more customers. But short term, it can drive them away. Our challenge is to keep our local businesses in business until the projects end.

A big part of making sure our businesses succeed is communication. The Chamber of Commerce has helped by bringing together the affected businesses to make sure they are in the loop on upcoming projects. Los Alamos County has done a great job staying ahead of this curve as well. Anyone can go to the County website and sign up for the “Cone Zone” emails about construction updates. Whenever possible they put out information about the coming changes in the detours so we can all plan around them. The County is also working on better signage to help the DP Road businesses.

Many of us know the owners of our small, local businesses, or someone who works for one. Think about the businesses that are being impacted by all of the road construction and try to support them.

What can you do to help?

  • Try to keep your back-to-school shopping local. Buying some of your school supplies at Village Arts would not only reduce your environmental impact but would save you time and gas, all while getting to know folks in our community. Check out the backpacks and new school shoes at CB FOX!
  • Eat & sip local. Instead of sitting in traffic leaving the hill, why not relax and eat here at one of our great restaurants like the Pajarito Brewpub and Grill. Their Pajarito Pub Burger was recently selected as one of the top seven green chili cheeseburgers in the state and will compete for bragging rights next month at the Green Chili Cheeseburger Smackdown! Or grab a free coffee while purchasing amazing pastries or crepes at Fleur de Lys!
  • Use local services. I’m happy to have all of my automotive repair work done locally as it saves me time and is often cheaper than using the dealership. So call Auto Doc or Automotive Professionals now to make your appointment.
  • Talk about our local businesses on social media. If you have a favorite local business or have had a great experience with one, share it! This can make a huge difference to small businesses that often don’t have huge advertising budgets.

Thank you for considering our local businesses during the road construction. With a little thoughtfulness and planning you can make a significant impact with every dollar you spend. I don’t know about you, but I want that dollar to go to my neighborhood small business owner, not Jeff Bezos. So choose, and shop, local.
