NMSP News:

As schools across New Mexico gear up for the 2018-19 school year, The New Mexico State Police want to remind drivers of the dangers our kids face every day as they make their way to and from school.

Always be aware of children walking, waiting for buses, riding their bikes, and getting on and off buses. Drivers should be especially alert around school buses.

Kids excited to go to school and to get home can unexpectedly dart into the roadway. For this reason, it’s important to be careful around buses. Slow down and take the extra time that just might safe a child’s life.

Always obey school bus signals. If a bus has its yellow lights on, it is about to make a stop. You should slow down and prepare for the bus to stop. Don’t try and beat the bus before its red lights are turned on. Once the bus turns on its red flashing lights and extends its STOP arm, all traffic, in both directions on undivided roads must come to a complete stop until the bus has turned off its red lights and the STOP arm has been retracted.

The New Mexico State Police in collaboration with the New Mexico Public Schools Insurance Authority have produced a school bus safety video that can be viewed across all New Mexico State Police social media platforms and is available at the YouTube link here https://youtu.be/eN79gxgMGJs.
