State Police Officer Involved In Shooting That Rescues Child From Hostage Situation

DONA ANA COUNTY -- At about 8 a.m. today, New Mexico State Police was called to assist Border Patrol and the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office with a vehicle that had failed to stop at the Border Patrol check point on I-25.

Border Patrol initiated a pursuit on the vehicle that came to an end on Interstate 25 around mile post 37.

The male driver armed himself with a firearm and barricaded inside the vehicle, holding a 7-year-old child hostage. During the standoff, a State Police officer fired their department issued weapon striking the suspect. The child was safely rescued, and the suspect was air lifted to an area hospital. His condition is unknown. The child and officers were uninjured.

The investigation is in the preliminary stages. More information will be released as it becomes available.
