Green is everywhere these days--in the news, politics, fashion, and even technology.

With a million messages and ideas coming at us from all sides, it can be easy to get caught up in the ordinary stuff--switching to organic foods, turning down the thermostat, recycling -- without thinking about the big picture of how your actions stack up.

Worse, you could even be suffering from a little green “fatigue” -- that is, tuning out the green messages due to its message overload.

While it’s easy to get overwhelmed, the truth is that everything single thing we do, every day, has an impact on the planet -- good or bad.

The good news is that you have the power to control most of your choices: from where you live to what you buy, eat, and use to light your home to where and how you vacation, to how you shop or vote...you have global impact.

The concept of this design class and embracing a greener lifestyle isn’t just about helping to preserve equatorial rain forests, it also means improving your health, padding your bank account, and, ultimately, improving your quality of life. It’s a six-week class, Monday evenings beginning Sept. 12 at University of New Mexico – Los Alamos (UNM-LA). For an hour and a half, we will talk design, specifically green design.

When renovating a home it’s important to know all your options. We will discuss things such as…Why should I “go green”- what’s in it for me?

  • Increase Your Home’s Value
  • Lower Your Electric & Water Bill
  • Increasing Your Home’s Durability
  • Improve Your Health
  • Improve Your Productivity

As a side note, at the end of every class there will be time set aside to talk about your design needs and questions. I want to know why you are taking the class and what you want to learn so I can make it most beneficial to you.

As a practical application, we will walk through a kitchen renovation using sustainable products and have fun along the way.

This class will educate the community about goods made from green (or greener) materials such as sustainably harvested wood, organic cotton, or repurposed and recycled materials and also offer little things you can do every day to make a shift in your habits that make a difference.

As a working mother and interior designer, finding easy and effective ways to be helpful and make an impact is key. I like to make changes that not only save time and money but also make it easy to lead by example.

As you can tell from this column, green design is my passion. I am so excited to offer the community this class and hope you attend. I can’t wait to meet you! Class size is limited.
