SFAS News:

The Santa Fe Animal Shelter, which saves thousands of animals every year is now ready to save humans through a Vitalant Blood Drive 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4.

Vitalant (formally United Blood Bank), one of the nation’s oldest and largest nonprofit community blood service providers, supplies comprehensive transfusion medicine services to nearly 1,000 hospitals and health care partners for patients in need across 40 states.

Everyone who donates blood during the event will receive a voucher for a fee-waived animal and a 25 percent off coupon for their resell store, The Cat North and The Cat South.

“We love our pet parents and all of us at the shelter, including the animals, want to make sure they are around for a long time,” shelter spokesperson Murad Kirdar said. “It’s a perfect win-win event, let’s save animals and save a human.”

This blood drive is essential as it gets harder to maintain a stable blood supply during the summer months. With an increase in travel, busy summer schedules, and a rise of accidents during the summer, the importance of secure blood supply is that much more significant.

Vitalant is the only blood service provider in New Mexico, and hospitals depend on them to deliver much needed blood to patients all over New Mexico.

Donors can schedule an appointment online (to save time), and walk-ins also are welcome. Blood donors must be at least 17-years-old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health.
