ROTARY News:

At its Nov. 12 meeting, the Rotary Club of Los Alamos presented Community Funding Awards to three area nonprofit organizations.

Rotarian and Committee Chair Jean Gindreau introduced the recipients, including the Los Alamos Historical Museum, Healing Americas Heroes and Los Alamos Middle School English Language Learners Program.

Historical Society Executive Director Liz Martineau accepted the Rotary funding on behalf of the museum for translating and producing brochures in different languages. The project will involve students from the English Language Learners program at UNM-Los Alamos, who will participate in the translation process.

Healing America’s Heroes, with representatives Eddie Crain, founder, James Barber and Linda and Doug Fox, explained that their funding will be used for the purchase of waders for their fly-fishing program, which serves veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. Fly-fishing outings usually take place along the Rio Chama and other fishing waters of northern New Mexico.

The final recipient, the Los Alamos Middle School English Language Leaners Program, is directed by teacher Jessica Dixon. She described the textbooks she will purchase as specially written for 12-14-year-old students whose first languages not English. Her students speak languages as diverse as French, Arabic, Spanish and Vietnamese.

The Rotary Club Community Funding Program will resume in the Spring of 2020, with information and applications available at www.rotarylosalamos.com.

The Rotary Club of Los Alamos meets at noon Tuesdays at Cottonwood on the Greens at the golf course. Everyone is welcome!
