Staff Report

A big event filled with kids and adults Sunday, June 2 at the Dixie Girl Restaurant raised $1,769.49 to enable fourth grade students thoughout Los Alamos Public Schools to participate in a swimming program this summer.

At times, the competition grew fierce at the "Are You Smarter Than a 4th Grader?" fundraiser, which taxed the intellectual capacity of more than one adult participant and showed off the brilliance of local students.

Laura Loy and other members of STARS - Service To All Rotary Satellite, organized the funfilled trivia event that included a pasta buffet.

STARS is comprised of motivated Los Alamos Rotarians who are determined to fit community and international service into their busy lifestyles, while at the same time having fun. The idea of STARS was born in 2012 by a few individuals who believed in the principles of Rotary, but due to busy schedules, couldn’t regularly make it to noontime meetings. Out of their need for more flexibility grew the idea of STARS – that anyone should be able to provide Service To All through a Rotary Satellite club.

Thus STARS was created as a satellite branch of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos. STARS meets at 5 p.m. every first and third Wednesday at the Posse Lodge. Check out the STARS facebook page for more information and a calendar of meetings and events, or contact STARS for information and how to join.
