Middle school jazz musicians from around the state gathered last weekend in Los Alamos this weekend for two days of intensive learning and rehearsal, culminating in a concert that’s open to the public.
Los Alamos Jazz Project Director Ryan Finn created the event to include middle school musicians in the state’s vibrant jazz education program.
“This year, the New Mexico Music Educators association expanded to include jazz in its All-State band programs, but that left middle school students without an all-state jazz event,” Finn said. “The Los Alamos Jazz Project wanted to step in and create an event for those students, so they could keep learning and playing jazz.”
The weekend event included jam sessions, rehearsals for two jazz big bands, intensive clinics and lectures from jazz educators from around the state, and a performance last Saturday showcasing the young players.
The Los Alamos Jazz Project is a local nonprofit dedicated to jazz performance and education.
