COUNTY News:

Residents who either own historic property or who may be considering securing a historic listing for their property are invited to attend a special presentation next week being sponsored by the Fuller Lodge/Historic Districts Advisory Board (FL/HDAB.)

Harvey Kaplan from the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division will present a slide show and talk focusing on “Financial Incentives for Historic Preservation” 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 in the Training Room of the Community Building, 475 20th St.

Kaplan will provide information about the Division’s financial incentives programs for historic preservation, including state income tax credits and low-interest loans that are available to owners of historic properties listed in the State Register of Cultural Properties and the National Register of Historic Places or for buildings that contribute to the significance of a listed historic district.

Federal income tax credits for income-producing historic buildings will also be a featured topic.

According to Kaplan, many historic Cold War resources are now of sufficient age and distinction for listing consideration and he will review that process and criteria to apply for funding consideration during his presentation, which is being sponsored by the FL/HDAB in an effort to educate residents about options that might exist to assist in preserving historic properties.

Los Alamos has as many as 30 listed landmarks or districts within the County, although few of these are privately owned.

Many other buildings and landmarks within the County are eligible for nomination if the owner wishes to do so.
