SFNF News:

SANTA FE – The Burn Team is working closely with the New Mexico Land Office and other partners to reduce hazardous fuels and restore forests and woodlands in the Copper Hill area west of Penasco.

Depending on weather and site conditions, the team will mobilize and begin burning May 29 through June 1.

Smoke may be visible from Picuris Pueblo, Penasco, Ojo Sarco, Dixon, Taos and surrounding areas. Smoke may settle into lower elevations and drainages overnight but should lift by mid-morning.

The USDA Forest Service, The Nature Conservancy's Rio Grande Water Fund and the Forest Stewards Guild have worked together since September 2018 using prescribed fire across more than 4,700 acres to protect water sources, wildlife, and forests while reducing wildfire risk. These forests are adapted to fire and need low-intensity burns to remain healthy.

The All Hands All Lands Burn Team (Burn Team) is a fully qualified team designed to lead prescribed burns or support others in burning across a variety of land jurisdictions. This is an innovative step forward to create resilient forests and communities in Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado.

Following the Copper Hill prescribed burn if conditions allow, and in close coordination with the Pueblo of Santa Clara, we plan to burn together to reduce hazardous fuels in and around Espanola.
