PEEC News:

Join bird expert Mouser Williams Tuesday, Dec. 4 at the Los Alamos Nature Center to learn about the upcoming Los Alamos Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This talk will begin at 7 p.m. and is free to attend.

Williams will provide an introduction to the CBC at this talk and will give an overview of what birding opportunities will be available to the general public this year. The Los Alamos CBC is Sunday, Dec. 16 throughout the day. Whether you’re an expert or a beginner, interested in long hikes or birding in your backyard, there are options to suit anyone in Los Alamos’s CBC.

The Dec. 4 talk is perfect for people who have never participated in a CBC before and want to learn more. Williams will be available after the talk to answer any questions the audience may have about the CBC, birding and related topics.

The CBC is the longest-running citizen science project in the world and has been happening annually since 1900. The National Audubon Society oversees this program and the results of it have been used by ecologists and ornithologists to track bird populations and distributions, including population responses to things like West Nile Virus, the banning of DDT and the warming climate. At the Los Alamos CBC, volunteers will break up into small teams that will spend the day identifying and counting every bird they can find.

Participants do not need to be expert birds, as each team will be assigned a local birding expert. Anyone wishing to participate in the CBC Dec. 16 should email Mouser Williams at mouser@mouser.org prior to the event and indicate their birding skill level, how much they would like to hike and how long they would like to be birding that day.
