PEEC News:

One of the best ways to begin bird watching is by looking for the birds you see and hear every day. To help beginning birders recognize some of the species living in Los Alamos, join long-time Los Alamos resident and bird watcher Dave Yeamans on a hike at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22 leaving from the Los Alamos Nature Center.

From there, the group will walk intently down the Ranch School Trail and to the confluence of Discovery and Pueblo Canyons. The return trip is uphill out of the Canyon along the same trail. While participants will likely see birds, quite a bit of observation is made by hearing. If hikers hear an interesting bird, there will be time to see it, if they can, and enjoy it. There might be 25 or so species to see and hear on this walk.

Yeamans is a long-time Los Alamos resident and bird watcher. He has studied and enjoyed the natural world and teaching in Nature for more than 50 years. He has taught in public schools, the Outward Bound School, and at PEEC. When asked, "What's your favorite bird," he responds "The bird I'm looking at."

Yeamans said he enjoys the interests of his students; no discovery they make is too small to be fascinating and a cause for celebration. He is on a very light-hearted mission to take photos of birds in each of the 50 United States. After that ... the world.

This hike is free, but please register in advance.
