Parade Of Storms To Continue Through Sunday

NWS News:

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a winter storm warning expected to continue until 4 p.m., Sunday.

Winter Storm Warning:

.AN UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL CONTINUE TO IMPACT AREAS EAST OF THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE WITH ACCUMULATING SNOW THROUGH THIS MORNING.

A NEW BATCH OF HEAVY SNOW WILL BEGIN TO DEVELOP ACROSS CENTRAL AND NORTHWEST AREAS THIS AFTERNOON AS A STRONG UPPER LEVEL LOW  PRESSURE SYSTEM DROPS SOUTHWARD INTO THE WESTERN UNITED STATES.

THE CENTER OF THIS STORM SYSTEM WILL TAKE DAYS TO REACH NEW MEXICO...STEERING A CONTINUOUS STREAM OF MOISTURE AND EMBEDDED DISTURBANCES OVER THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS THROUGH AT LEAST SUNDAY.

ADDITIONAL SNOW ACCUMULATION ACROSS THE NORTHERN MOUNTAINS WILL BE MEASURED IN FEET WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE NEAR THE COLORADO BORDER.

SNOW ACCUMULATIONS:

  • THROUGH TODAY ADDITIONAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 5 INCHES WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS ABOVE 7,500 FEET. EXPECT ADDITIONAL SNOW ACCUMULATION TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY OF 6 TO 10 INCHES BELOW 7500 FEET...AND 10 TO 20 INCHES ABOVE 7,500 FEET.
  • AN EXCEPTION WILL BE THE WEST SLOPES OF THE SOUTHERN SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS WHERE LOCATIONS ABOVE 8,000 FEET MAY ACCUMULATE UP TO 36 INCHES OF SNOW TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY.
  • TIMING...PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THIS MORNING...BEFORE INTENSIFYING THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. PERIODS OF SNOW WILL THEN CONTINUE EACH DAY AND NIGHT THROUGH AT LEAST SUNDAY.
  • WINDS...SIGNIFICANT WINDS ARE NOT EXPECTED AT THIS TIME.
  • SNOW LEVELS...TEMPERATURES WILL BE COLD ENOUGH FOR SATURDAY MORNING. SNOW LEVELS WILL RAISE TO AROUND 8,000 FEET SATURDAY   AFTERNOON THROUGH SUNDAY.
  • LOCAL IMPACTS...DETERIORATING ROAD CONDITIONS AND REDUCED VISIBILITIES WILL MAKE FOR HAZARDOUS TRAVEL WITH PERIODS OF HEAVY SNOW. THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO HOMES AND BUILDINGS BY THIS WEEKEND DUE TO HEAVY WET SNOW ACCUMULATION ON ROOFTOPS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS:

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT...FOOD... AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
