Astor Piazzolla's María de Buenos Aires is a fully-staged opera with orchestra, sung in Spanish with both English and Spanish translation supertitles, and presented in two acts with one intermission. Conducted by Anthony Barrese, it tells the story of a tango-obsessed María, a prostitute born in a poor suburb of Buenos Aires, who sleepwalks through life, death, the afterlife, and is reborn into "innocence." The music is based on "nuevo tango," a genre that Piazzolla revolutionized by incorporating elements from jazz and classical music.

María de Buenos Aires will be performed at 2 p.m., Sundays and 7:30 p.m., Wednesday and Friday Feb. 17, 20, 22 and 24, in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre.
