Mountain Elementary School Principal Jennifer Guy received surprise recognition Thursday from the State of New Mexico Legislature for her professionalism and leadership in the Los Alamos Public Schools.

Sen. Richard Martinez presented Guy with the Certificate of Appreciation at the request of Eileen Jaramillo, the school’s custodial caretaker.

“I saw Eileen at a restaurant recently and she asked me what it would take to get Jennifer recognized for being so wonderful to the staff, teachers, parents and students at Mountain Elementary,” Martinez said. “I told her I would be happy to help and that she needed to gather some letters of recommendation. I was very happy to do this because my wife of 32 years was a special ed teacher, a coach and a principal, so I know first hand how underappreciated educators can be.”

Jaramillo didn’t have much time to get the letters of recommendation for Martinez, but the staff and teachers were in full support so the letters were completed on time.

“My husband helped me so much,” Jaramillo said. “He knows Sen. Martinez and Jennifer’s husband, so that really helped me get it done and keep it a secret.”

When asked why she pursued this recognition for Guy, Jaramillo explained that in her 17 years of service to the school, Guy has been the best to work with.

“The whole staff loves her and feels honored and privileged to work with her,” Jaramillo said. “She’s so easy going, always smiling and no matter what is happening, she puts her hand on your shoulder and says: We’ll take care of it ... she’s just amazing.”Jaramillo said.
