As the Los Alamos Police Department participates in bringing recognition to October’s Domestic Violence Awareness month, we would also like to extend our welcome to our newest addition to the department, the Victim Assistant.

The Victim Assistant acts as a liaison for victims, providing services to support victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, harassment, dating violence and other related issues. The Victim Assistant provides support to the victims of crimes with information about the options available to them. The identity of the Victim Assistant is kept confidential for safety reasons but can be contacted at 505.663.3511.

Domestic Violence is defined as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. In our community, domestic violence is not uncommon. This year, the reports responded to by our police department, 53 percent of the offenders were male and 47 percent were female. This issue does not discriminate on age, race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, education, etc.

The Victim Assistant collaborates with local and neighboring agencies that together support in the recovery of victims of crime.

Here are some of the resources available to those in need of services:

  • Crisis Hotline and Shelters:
    • Crisis Center of Northern NM (Española), Community Against Violence (Taos), New Mexico Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and National Domestic Violence Hotline.
  • Sexual Assault Services:

  • Medical/Behavioral Health:

In addition to collaborating with agencies, the Victim Assistant works in conjunction with the Domestic Violence Task Force. The Domestic Violence Task Force is a partnership of agencies and community members that is designed to share resources and gain knowledge to better serve those that have experienced domestic violence.

Note: At 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13, there is an open invitation to all who are interested in helping to paint “the rock” in White Rock to draw attention to Domestic Violence Awareness.
