POLICE News:

Los Alamos Chief of Police Dino Sgambellone released calls for service and crime statistics for 2013, compiled by the Records Division of the Los Alamos Police Department.

Offenses reported as crime statistics are determined by the FBI Uniform Crime Report Program and are classified as crimes against persons (violent crime) and crimes against property. The offenses of murder (homicide), rape, robbery and assault make up the violent crime category. The offenses of arson, burglary, larceny, and auto theft make up the property crime category. Both of these categories are referred to as Part I Offenses.

Officers responded to 204 overall Part 1 Offense complaints in 2013, which represents a 23 percent decrease as compared to 264 offenses during the same period in 2012.

Violent crime decreased from 60 offenses in 2012 to 44 in 2013, a 27 percent decrease. Officers investigated 305 accidents compared to 310 reported in 2012, a 2 percent decrease.

"While many factors contribute to overall crime rates in a community, our proactive, professional policing and community partnerships have undoubtedly contributed to this decrease," Sgambellone said in his report. "We look forward to continued collaborative efforts as we honor our commitment to those we serve."
