DPLA News:
Los Alamos residents and members of the Democratic Party of Los Alamos joined people around the state and across the nation in rallies against repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The local rally was held near Los Alamos Medical Center and attended by about two dozen people from the very young to the elderly. Many carried signs or American flags and chanted health-related messages between speakers.
Los Alamos County Councilor Pete Sheehey spoke briefly about a local resident and small business owner who avoided bankruptcy after suffering a heart attack only because of his coverage under the ACA.
Dr. Tyler Taylor addressed six myths about healthcare; for example, that we have the greatest health care system in the world. In fact, he said, it is great for those who are very wealthy and those with top-tier insurance, but for many people, a trip to the emergency room is the beginning of bills that they cannot pay, collection agencies calling, and in some cases, bankruptcy.
Several of the speakers addressed personal experiences that would be familiar to other people in the community.
The point of the rally, and rallies held in other New Mexico counties today, was to oppose the Republican health care bill and to support quality, affordable health care accessible to all.
