LASO, LANL Increase Fire Restrictions

on July 2, 2012 - 4:37pm

The National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos Site Office (LASO) has upgraded fire restrictions on Department of Energy property to prohibit all outside recreational and off-road driving activities.

The upgrade to Stage III fire restrictions coincides with that of Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Both organizations imposed Stage II fire restrictions last week, and are now increasing their postures to Stage III.

“We are not seeing any near-term relief in the hot and dry weather,” LASO Manager Kevin Smith said. “Fire-fighting resources are spread out across the Southwest, so we must take additional fire prevention measures.”

The restricted areas include all DOE property, including Los Alamos National Laboratory, within Los Alamos, Sandoval and Santa Fe counties except areas specifically listed as open: paved parking lots and hard-surfaced roadways.

Prohibited recreational activities include walking, jogging, hiking and biking.

Also prohibited is driving off of prepared-surfaced, established roadways and/or parking lots.

LASO informed the Los Alamos Sportsmen’s Club last week of prohibited activities under Stage II restrictions.

Under Stage III, the government-leased club prohibits archery and other outside recreation activities on the gun club property.

“This order is necessary to protect health and safety due to increased fire danger," said Deputy Group Leader Manny L’Esperance of the Lab’s Emergency Operations Office. "However, fire officials will continue to monitor conditions and rescind this order once conditions allow.”
