A perfect union that came together serendipitously last month has led to $1,800 being generously donated to the LAHS Robotics FIRST Team 4153 by the Santa Fe Auto Park. Los Alamos Public Schools Foundation executive director Laura Loy had just gotten off a phone call in which she learned the team had a shortage of funds to pay for travel to attend a competition in Denver, when a representative from the Santa Fe Auto Park called asking for help to facilitate a donation to Los Alamos schools.

“It was like a sign that this was a perfect match,” said Loy. “It was even better that the funding was needed for transportation, and it was a company in the transportation industry looking to make a donation.”

Specifically three dealers from the Santa Fe Auto Park contributed $600 each: Capitol Ford Lincoln, Chevrolet Cadillac of Santa Fe, and Lithia Chrysler Jeep. The dealers advertised during a recent event at Smith’s Marketplace that for every test drive taken, $10 would be donated to the robotics team.

The LAPS Foundation is an independent organization that supports, challenges, and invests in a successful future for all Los Alamos public school students. Part of its strategic plan points to supporting clubs that enhance school programs, such as the robotics team.

"The LAPS Foundation has been a key supporter of the LAHS Robotics Club, FIRST Team 4153--Project Y,” said mentor Andy Erickson. “The Foundation has provided fundraising support for the Team to raise money for our program and for travel to competitions, which are in Flagstaff and Denver this year. The Foundation's help allows our all-volunteer mentors to focus more on our mission as an after-school STEM program and the education of the students involved in our program."

The Foundation raises money through generous contributions from individuals and organizations who share the Foundation’s core values that excellent public education is every child's right, and that excellent public education systems depend on: a well-informed and supportive community, caring and competent educators, a supportive and responsive school environment, and sufficient financing to achieve educational goals.

“We were so pleased when these three dealers from the Santa Fe Auto Park reached out to us to express their interest in supporting education in Los Alamos,” said Loy. “It shows that their generosity is spread throughout the region they serve,” she added.

"We enjoy bringing our Ride & Drive Events to Los Alamos, and working with the Los Alamos community,” said a representative of the Santa Fe Auto Park. “The timing worked out perfectly with our February event, and we were thrilled to help the Robotics Team reach their upcoming competition! We wish them the best of luck at Regionals!"

Through donations such as this, the LAPS Foundation has infused more than $1 million into Los Alamos Public Schools since 2005 to fund opportunities and materials for students, provide professional development for district educators, defray operating expenses, and assist with capital improvements to enrich learning environments in the Los Alamos public schools.
